Manatee Adventures Tour Guide & FAQs
Core Trip Planning & Expectations
Q: Can you legally swim with wild manatees in Florida?
A: Yes! Crystal River, Florida is the only place in North America where you can legally swim and interact with manatees in their natural habitat. All tours are conducted using strict "passive observation" guidelines to ensure ethical, safe encounters.
Q: How long does a manatee swim tour last?
A: Your entire excursion lasts approximately 3 hours from the time you check in at our dock to your return. This includes your safety video briefing, gear fitting, boat transit, and in-water swim time.
Q: What gear is included with my booking?
A: We provide absolutely everything you need for a comfortable swim at no extra charge. Your tour includes a professional mask, snorkel, fins, and a sanitized wetsuit. We also provide flotation gear, a USCG-certified captain, an in-water guide, and bottled water.
Q: Where is Manatee Adventures located?
A: Our boats depart from Pete's Pier Marina, located at 1 SW 1st Pl, Boat Slip 106, Crystal River, FL 34429. Our unique boat slip location is the closest to the head springs, meaning you enjoy a shorter boat ride and more swim time with the manatees.
Is gratuity included in the cost of the trip?
A: No, while it is not required tipping your captain and crew when they provide great service is always appreciated.
Safety, Age Limits & Rules
Q: Are manatee swim tours safe for children and beginners?
A: Yes. The calm, shallow spring waters are perfect for families and beginners. No prior snorkeling experience is required. While we do not have a hard age limit, children must be able to fit our smallest wetsuit size (Size 4, fitting roughly 30–35 lbs) and must be accompanied by an adult.
Q: How close will I get to a wild manatee?
A: Manatees are naturally curious animals and will frequently swim up within inches of swimmers who remain completely quiet and still. It is illegal to chase, corner, or pursue them, but if you float passively, they will often initiate the interaction themselves.
Q: Can I bring my own underwater camera on the boat?
A: You are welcome to bring a camera, but extended selfie sticks and camera flashes are strictly prohibited as they frighten the wildlife. To keep your trip stress-free, a professional in-water photographer accompanies every tour to capture high-quality photos of your group.
Q: How many people fit on a single tour boat?
A: To keep your experience intimate and uncrowded, our specialized passenger vessels accommodate a maximum of 6 guests. If you have a larger group, we can deploy multiple boats simultaneously to accommodate parties of up to 12 people.
